Senior Patent Attorney (Manager). c£Excellent plus benefits. UK/EPO qualified. Reporting to the Senior Manager, Patents the function of the position is to work closely with the Head of Patents to assist in all aspects of practice management and professional development and business development in the UK. Recent expansion has lead to a need for a Senior Manager to take on part of the responsibility for management of the practice in order that the Head of Patents can devote more time to develop the patents business in the UK and other countries. The person will also be expected to undertake a significant amount of fee-earning work without supervision. The responsibilities will include managing junior staff in professional matters, taking responsibility for client management, and undertaking marketing activities in the UK and to take on direct client management for existing clients. Other aspects of the management role will include development of office practices and working closely with support staff to develop their professional abilities.
The person in this position will be expected to take decisions relating to the day-to-day operations the patents business in the UK. A suitable candidate will be a qualified UK and European patent attorney with more than five years post-qualification experience and more than 10 years overall experience in the patent attorney field. An important aspect of the position is to bring to the practice a good broad understanding of the business of IP generally and the position of patents within this general business. It is also important to have a good understanding of international patent practice, especially the patent systems of major industrial countries. Extensive experience of UK, EPO and PCT practice is necessary. It is important that the candidate can demonstrate these required abilities. The position may be particularly suitable for someone who has worked in-house with management responsibility. Technically, the candidate should have experience working in the field of physics and electronics (not essential).
