Play, Space and Creation
Play, Space and Creation
Working with Artistic Director, Matt Feerick and Performer, Charlotte Dubery, the focus of these two weekend workshops will be on training as an ensemble through movement theatre, improvisation and devising based on the teachings of Jacques Lecoq.
Beginning with the human body, the ensemble members will experience how their body moves in its natural form before pushing it to personal and physical extremes during the workshops as they explore a diversity of physical approaches to performance.
Performers will be investigating theatre in its barest and most essential form using mime to engage with different uses of space and scale allowing the company to take themselves and their audience wherever their imaginations inspire them.
The company will be encouraged to play and engage with the expressive potential of the human body through the exploration of mime, expressive movement, music, poetry, text and object manipulation.
The aim of the workshops is to create a site for each individual to build upon once being equipped with theatrical tools that they can explore and develop as they create their own style and theatrical language. Each weekend workshop will end with a devised performance created by the company.
These workshops are suitable for students (undergraduate, post graduate and mature) who wish to complement their studies, build their performance skills and confidence through exploring new sources of inspiration and developing new theatrical skills. It is also suitable for non - performing artists, such as writers, directors, designers who are looking for new ways in which to approach theatre and find new creative impulses. The only requirement is a passion for theatre and a energetic sense of fun and play.
Weekend 1 : Play
(10th & 11th October)
The first weekend will begin with silent psychological play as a neutral starting point from which the ensemble members can then work from. The company will then start to experiment during the movement and improvisation classes with the dynamics of nature through the exploration of materials, animals, natural elements, colours, lights and sounds which aims to develop the miming body and strengthen character acting.
Performers are encouraged to look at the life surrounding them, to examine how it moves and in turn moves them and to explore how the life they find can be transposed into a universal theatrical language. The weekend will culminate in a devised performance.
Weekend 2 : Create
(24th & 25th October)
The second weekend will focus on the arts of music, painting, objects, poetry and text with the aim of developing the ensembles sense of rhythm during play and on stage as performers. The ensemble members will have the opportunity to put their previous explorations of nature into further practice as they work from the abstract and discover that sometimes the splats of paint that fall off the canvas onto the floor can be just as exciting as the painting itself. The company will learn to develop a shared sense of focus, rhythm and space as well as how to use these key theatrical skills in constructing and performing theatre and storytelling. The weekend will culminate in a devised performance.
The workshops will be taking place at
